Tips for travelling in Poland & Austria?
Any tips for travelling in Poland & Austria? Despite my last name, I've never been. Anything to make sure I do, bring, or see? Any gotchas to watch out for?

Hello Michael:
You're in for a grand adventure. Last October my wife and I spent six weeks roaming around Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and surrounding area we had a heck of a good time. As for gotchas be super careful in and around train stations, my advice do your best to blend in and appear to know where your going even if you don't have a clue. These places are the home of some of the best pick pockets in the world....never ever turn your back on your luggage and be very careful of the old one person distracts you while his partner rips you off trick. Based on your last name the language may not be an issue for you but just incase be aware that the Slovak langauges have no relationship what so ever to any other language you may speak or read. You will find very few signs in English and very few older people that can or will speak English. If you need help ask someone under 30. If you plan to use taxies be sure to get a firm price before you climb in and be darn sure you understand the currancy before you start spending. If your not careful you can spend 40 bucks for a two minute cab fare and not realize it till much later. On what to see all I can say is everything, Poland is a country of amaizing contrasts. Not to very long ago it was under the control of the comunists so you will have grey block apartment buildings next door to the most modern shopping mall you have ever seen....simply put weird. Have a grand time...if you have detailed questions please feel free to ask. Brian |
