Preventing Packet Pitfalls

I'm using HDVSplit to capture video from my FX1 to a laptop. I drop about 1 packet per hour of film, but now and then it drops a ton of them. What is happening that causes dropped packets? Do I need more ram? Does the tape drive need servicing? Is it a connection issue?

I have two laptops, and I want to capture with the weaker one (i.e. 1GB Ram, no video card) and render with the stronger one (2GB Ram, 256 video card). I use a firewire card to connect to my 320GB WD external HD. I also use firewire to connect to my FX1.
