capture card and drive speed

I am looking to begin my video experience on the computer. I realize I need a capture card - what type should I get?? I really want a decent one so I can get what I put down on tape (by the way I have an XL1S)...also, I want to get a 160 gig external drive...how fast should I get one??
Thanks
Dean

Um...since you have an XL1, I wonder if this high-definition forum is the best place for you to post this question in?

Just a thought.

Oh and .... get a $15 firewire card and a 7200rpm 8MB cache harddrive.
