IEEE1394 interface problem

I edit using FCP3. I've been using a mini-DV camera as my DV device. I recently bought a discontinued mini DV/S-VHS deck (JVC HR DVS-2) which I thought would be perfect, as I also use a VHS deck in my system. I figured I'd do away with 2 units and combine them into 1. Unfortunately, I cannot get any results when I plug the firewire directly from my Mac into the JVC deck...no picture on my monitor, or recording ability. Can anyone with any experience in this lend any insight?
