When I load the sample footage into FCP, it seems to think its 1440 x 810 ?

I used Streamclip to convert it. Did I mess up somewhere along the line.

Any idea whats going on there?

Shealan, you need to use the "demux to unscaled m2v and aiff" option. (FCP is rescaling it to 1440*810 to retain the 16:9 aspect ratio). This will give you the 4:3 ratio with an anamorphic squeeze. Unfortunately there isn't a pixel aspect ratio that suites HDV (1.333)

Thanks for the advise.

Heres hoping Apple update FCP soon to support these new formats.
