DVHS JVC decks differences?

I'm checking out the differences at JVC's site, but to be honest, it seems the same. Except one thing:

The HMDH40000 has D-Theater compliant with the advanced D-VHS security system

vs.

The HM-DH30000 which doesn't have it.

Any ideas what's different?

The 40k has better quality analog record and playback, converts analog tape sound to TOSLink optical, and features DTS sound. I've also read the 40K has a new tape transport system and new decoder, but have been unable to verify that. It does have a new menu system and both firewires are on back. I have both and the 40K seems to record a bit better but they both work well. I like the front firewire port on the 30K. New 30Ks seem to be going for $450plus and the 40K for about $590 delivered. For this price difference I would get the 40K.

confused.

if the differences are only slight and you like the front firewire port - why spend an extra $140 for the 40k?

Actually, a weirder question is why is the list price on the 30 $1299 and the 40 is $999, yet the 40 is priced HIGHER than the 30, street-wise?

I noticed that too - but I just assumed that the 40K came out so much later and the cost of the technology decreased so quickly that had they created a new list price on teh 30K at the time the 40k came out - it would have been more like $800. Thats just a guess - if anyone wants to support or refute it - feel free.

I spent the extra on the 40K because it is a newer model with DTS sound capability.
The firewire is not that big a deal as you still have both, they are just on back. On the 30K one is in front and one on back. I
have only had the 40k about 2 wks and I can't really say that it works any better than the 30k for my uses. I just bought my first tape with DTS sound but have not yet played it.

HD-30000U vs HD-400000U

I've read everything I can from the JVC website and apart from their appearance, I can't find a difference between the two models.

the description on the JVC web site has an identical list of features on each box, though in a different order.

does anyone have the scoop?

James, your question has been added to this thread since it
was already talking about the difference.

http://www.jvc.com/product.jsp?model...L026758&page=2

I got booted over here. I didn't notice this thread.

makes sense to be here since this theread was first.

If you click on the "features" link on both units the feature sets are identical.

thanks for ironing out the differences.

My next move is to DL the manuals. Nice of JVC to make them available.

The 40k is probably just a new model. Essentially, the XL-1 and the XL-1s are identical, minus a lot of new bells and whistles. But to me, the image on both cameras are the same.

James, try contacting JVC. They should be able to tell you what
the differences are.

I saw a 30k deck at Sears for $400, but my friend warned me that there may not be component in/outputs.

The 30k's feature set never included component inputs, but it does include component outputs.

Gints,

Does the 40k have component input AND output?

Heath,

From the spec sheets on the JVC web site, both the R3k and R4k have component out but no component in.
