Re: RED Simplifies Camera Lineup & Reduces Prices
Anything beyond 5K is pointless unless you’re going for Vista Vision or IMAX type shots. And to be honest something like Paul Blart Mall Cop IV doesn’t need to be shot in VV or IMAX.
Just shot a project at work in 5K and finished in 4K. It looked indistinguishable from 8K footage on a 40 inch 4K monitor. 8K is over indulgence. I could pull a 18mp still from the footage. It’s still pretty much crystal clear and sharp zoomed in at 200x. There’s a reason why ARRI remains so popular in the film community. Because they recognize the film look has limitations. And those limitations are what make film look so unique. The grain/noise, flares, etc. Arri perfects things here and there, but stays true to the look and feel of film. So Red is shooting themselves in the foot by increasing the resolution. The only reason why it’s useful is reframing. But that defeats the purpose unless you’re a lazy filmmaker or your shooting for stills/print. Don’t get me wrong. I love RED. Shoot with em. But for them to keep releasing different resolutions for 10s of thousands of dollars without perfecting what they already have, is just irresponsible. |
