B&H Photo
Is it me, or should I expect B&H to be open more than 4 days in the month of October? Wondering where my order was and checked their holiday scheduled closed all but 4 days in October?

They strictly observe Jewish holidays. Considering the busy holiday period, I don't think this is a decision they make lightly.

B&H isn't losing any money. Far from it. They're one of the most successful retailers in the business. And thanks to the free enterprise system that runs this great country, they have the right to be open or closed whenever they so choose. It's always a good idea to check their holiday schedule before ordering. Hope this helps,

Yes, and remember that you as a consumer have the choice to go to other places that might be open. Personally, I like another one of the sponsors. Call Chris and ZGC and she'll hook you up every day short of Xmas.

I know I have the right, but usually I didn't expect it to be an entire month.. Usually they post their holiday schedule with days, I was taken off guard and thought it weird an entire month..
I also have to say I disagee with you they lost $4000 dollars today as our company was going to pick up a PD-170 and have it overnighted.. So they may be ok with not having the income, but they do lose some amount of money or lose the opportunity to make money. But don't get me wrong here, I like B&H and will continue to do business however it's the first time in MY LIFE I have a seen a major retailer shut down for an entire month for a Holiday.. |

I suppose you're right, they do "lose sales" when they're not open, but my point is that they've been operating this way for 30 years, and when you walk into their place in Manhattan, you can tell they're not too concerned about losing any sales.
Personally I admire them for placing a higher importance and a greater value on something other than the opportunity to make more money. And yes October is a sparse month at B&H, what with Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and Sukkos as nearly back-to-back holidays. But hey, they're open Christmas Day and most every Sunday, so how about that. The customer who considers B&H would be well advised to research their holiday schedule before making an important or time-critical purchase... there's a link to that in our B&H entry on our Sponsors page (see top nav bar above right). |

hooray for worker's rights!
If even half of those are paid holidays for employees, I'm only shopping at B&H from now on. That would be amaziing.

I have always admired B&H's business practice and professional decorum, as well as their respect for their religion, in realizing, as Chris said, there are more important things in this world than money. But I must say, I hope they don't shut down THAT long too many more times; I have never worked harder in my entire life than in October, as all my salespeople. It's almost like one of the HMO doctors was out and we were her stand-in specialists. : )
I can still hear the phones ringing, even at home, even on Dec. 4th... It was a consistent ring from the moment you walked into work until the moment you left, nonstop, no matter how many you picked up. We took care of it, but I must admit, it was a challenge...

Rush, a lot of business' would like to have your problems, hehehe.
If they plan on closing down next Oct, can you get temp help? Sort of like the way the malls staff up just for Christmas? |

We are thinking of doing that, the problem is most people who call us expect a certain level of expetise that can't be had with temp workers. But we may have some people just at the frontlines, to take simple orders that don't require tech knowhow. Though, I think that the 3 holidays occurring back to back is not a common occurence.
