Thanks Robert, I was wondering why I saw so many familiar names from my old Canopus days registering here today.

Does that include capture and export of 24p?

And does it buffer HDV capture with conversion to HQ so you can use any computer?

If not, they are still behind AspectHD?

Unless they've upgraded the HQ capture algorithm, I wouldn't count on that. With Edius 3.5 I had to build a dual-core computer just to reliably capture to the HQ format, but then it takes a lot of horsepower to edit HQ effectively anyway. In that sense Canopus is behind Cineform in being able to work well on older computers, but my brother says the Canopus codec produces better preview quality (at least on his computer) than Cineform does. Apparently Canopus considers it important to always deliver full resolution, full frame rate previews, which is nice from a quality perspective but a significant hindrance to performance.

On the plus side for Edius, it supports mixing all kinds of footage on one timeline without converting first, with a handy "Layout" tool for fitting any kind of clip to any project setting. You can also change project settings at will while working on a project, so you can switch back and forth from HD to SD and from 4x3 to 16x9 to see how all that looks. (There's a few catches to doing this, but overall it works surprisingly well.) Canopus is also about to release their new Speed Encoder software for more rapid output of MPEG2 and HDV files, which could be particularly useful for making SD DVDs from an HD timeline.
