Basic question re grabbing a single frame

I've never tried to grab a single frame from a video before - it must be simple, but not sure how to do it. The video is ProRes 2.5k from a BMCC.

I need one full resolution still to be used on a flyer for an orchestra's next performance. Need to do it in either/both Edius 7 or Vegas 12

Thanks

Re: Basic question re grabbing a single frame

In Vegas 12 there is a little floppy disc icon in the top of your video preview window for it. In edius select the timeline window and hit control/T and it will save a frame grab to your bin and you can drag it to another window. There is also a button I believe you can add for capturing a frame in edius but I just use the shortcut.

Re: Basic question re grabbing a single frame

Control + T is the shortcut for a single image in Windows Bitmap format; the hard way is to go F11 which brings up "Print to File" menu, on the left go all the way down to "Others", then click on "Still Image" on the right. Click "Export", choose your file name and location, choose your format and click "Save Single Picture" or "Save between In/Out in sequential files", which will export all the frames between in and out or all the frames of the video on your timeline if you have no in/out points set. Going F11 has the advantage of giving you additional options like capturing the whole frame or only upper or lower field, filtering, etc.

Re: Basic question re grabbing a single frame

In Edius 6.5 there is an icon looking like square with a dot in the middle, place your timeline cursor in the required position & hit the button which will then grab a still. I would then import it into something like PS to de-interlace & adjust contrast etc.

Re: Basic question re grabbing a single frame

You can change the defaults for saving captured stills:
From page 71 of the E7 user manual
Click Settings -> System Settings-> Importe/Exporter->Still Image
Set each item.
