To deck or not to deck

Hey guys, I'm wondering if those of you who do use them... how do you deal with footage coming from different brand cameras. I'm working for the most part with Sony HDV at the moment but I'm looking into variable frame rate cameras which might lead me to another brand, not to mention I have tapes coming in from all kinds of cameras.

Or are most of you guys just using your cameras as decks.
