HDV Playback/Digitize on various equipment : Is it compatible with itself?
People are saying how HDV isn't compatible with itself and how you're screwed if you shoot one camera and you're stuck there....
I beg to differ.... Just like there are only TWO formats of DV25 --> DV & DVCAM those two are different and nobody is compaining about that (three if you include dvcpro25).....the way I see it now......likewise there are only TWO formats of HDV--> the newest 720 and the newest 1080. - The new 720 is what the JVC HD100 will handle...backwards compatible and can play & digitize through firewire all previous versions of 720 (including HD1/10) - The new 1080 is what the Canon XL-H1 will handle...backwards compatible and can play & digitize through firewire all previous versions of 1080 (including Sony FX1/Z1U) With those two cameras, you can play and digitize any and all HDV ever made. So basically...pick your resolution (720 or 1080), then buy the latest gear, and you're good. It's just that simple. And as far as newer 1080 decks go....slow down cowboys...give it some time. Decks are on the way. The FX1 didn't have a deck to play it's footage in for MONTHS, so why is everybody all anxious now? They're coming. And honestly...I have a feeling....There's gonna be a single deck that will play both 720 & 1080 HDV, just like there are decks today that play both DV and DVCAM. And it will probably be made by SHARP! *smile* - ShannonRawls.com
