Night Shots...are stars the limit?

This July I plan to shoot a documentary in a remote area of the Sierra Nevada in California. I'm going to be in such an amazing area, it would be a shame not to get some B-roll beauty shots. Specifically, I'd like to try a time-lapse of star tracks about the north star...yes, I know it's hackneyed, but still kind of fun to try. Before I go out and waste a bunch of tape stock, though, I figured I'd ask the community: does anyone have any experience shooting long exposures of stars with the Z1?? If so, what would be the recommended settings (iris, F-stop, gain, etc.). Once again, many thanks in advance for any advice!

Cheers!
