Mixing 1080p & 720p? at DVinfo.net

Hello,

I wanted to ask a question regarding resolution choices.

If most HDTVs are 720p and broadcast is 720p/1080i, how much visual benefit is there to shooting 1080p?

At this point is 1080p overkill or can you actually see a difference when your project is finished.

Also, would there be any compatability issues with a 1080p project with 720p equipment?

I am interested in some 720-60p shooting, but other parts of my project don't need 60p motion, so would I benefit from shooting the rest in 1080p?

Tim, 720p is arguably "good enough" for the vast majority of HDTVs and home theater setups. In my own experience, I believe it to be the real sweet spot in HD production, a nice balance of resolution vs. filesize (and rendering requirements). Bear in mind as well that if you mix 720p and 1080p in a project on the same timeline, either the 720p will need to be uprezzed, or the 1080p will need to be downrezzed. IMHO it would seem that it makes more sense for you to source everything at 720p. All just my opinions, of course.
