Most compatible embed code?

Does anyone have any input as far as the most compatible code for embedding videos into web pages? Specifically windows media and quicktime.

By most compatible, I mean across the different browsers.. I've noticed that sometimes you can have a codeblock that embeds a video player perfectly in one browser and doesn't even show up in another..

So if anyone here has found good code for cross browser compatiblity that wants to share, that would be great!

flash would be a good solution.
windows media player is great but suffer from so many version and users setting that you can hardly expect always same behavior.
Quicktime requires to be installed like flash but is a lot heavier.
