Old projector flicker and burn
Does anyone know if there are any plug-ins for FCP or After Effects that mimic the flicker of an old projector AND also showing the film start to burn once it gets stuck?
Maybe stutter is a better word than flicker...I'm looking for the look of a poorly threaded reel rather than the strobe effect of the early, early projectors. |

These guys have a flicker http://www.chv-plugins.com/film.html that is supposed to be very nice (I haven't tried it). I had to do a burn effect many years ago. But is was supposed to be comedy so I made it as cheesy as possible. I did a center wipe to a flame with transparency adjusted to reveal the new layer. It was all done before non-linear, so multiple passes of betacam were used to layer.

Jeff,
Thanks...that is a good flicker filter. I'll keep searching for the burn...I'm hoping to get the bubbling-burn effect. |

John,
The CHV plugin that Jeff mentioned does a great job. If I get a chance today, I will post some footage from it. I highly recommend it. |

Paul,
I'd still like to see your footage...but I couldn't resist...I went ahead and bought it. I played with it a bit and you're right, it's great. Here's something I whipped together real quick...it's so easy to use it didn't take any time at all. I went a bit overboard with the settings...threw in the works...dust, scratches, jumps, flickers...just had a ball. Now if I could just have it bubble-burn at the end instead of fade out, I'd have myself the logo I had in mind. http://zchildress.com/sursumwho/sf_opslate_oldie.mov |

John,
I think you will be happy with your purchase. Hope to get the footage online. If I recall, I might have a film burn plugin. Will check and let you know. |

It has the look of an old film newsreel. Very cool looking. |

Thanks, Jeff.
I found a bubble and burn filter...finally. It's part of the Boris Continuum filter set. Unfortunately, it's $400! |

Hi John,
I just have found out about this forum. Thanks for the good press! Bubbles and a Burn-effect.... Good idea. I think I will add these features to the Film-filter. But it will take a little while. There is so much to do these days... X-mas, writing manuals, updates, specials... and tomorrow the new 3D-Explode... http://www.chv-plugins.com/

Hi Christoph!
You've got some fans here, definitely...with me at the top of the list. The Film-filter is great...within a few hours of buying it, I'd already put it to use. I'm looking at other filters you've made now, too. If you can come up with the "bubble and burn" effect filter...I'll be the first in line to buy it! Looking forward to seeing the 3-D Explode filter...I'll check your web site tomorrow to check it out. Also, I'll send you the footage you mentioned in your e-mail. Thanks! |
