USB or Firewire?
Is there a difference in the final quality of a DVD, if an external DVD burner is connected via USB compared with if it's connected via Firewire?

No. Regardless of the physical connection type, it is going to be the same digital bit stream that is being pushed to the DVD burner to burn to disk.
