Importing effects

I'm learning Final Cut Pro. In the past I used a stand alone system, Applied Magic, which was extremely easy to use. I could put a cd of special effects, such as "jump backs, with no difficulty. My question is this: "Does everything have to be converted into a quick time movie to be imported successfully into FCP?"
