Capturing SD from tape: dv deck or intensity pro card?

I have a BR-DV600U for capturing SD from tape. I can go through firewire or component, and the intensity pro allows me to go from the deck directly to the card for capture to pro-res. First question is, is there a difference in quality between fw capture to pro-res and intensity capture to pro-res?

Second question refers to frame sizes. I tried a batch capture with the intensity pro, and it wants to capture NTSC footage at 720x486... Why does it want to capture an extra 6 lines of pixels, and how do I get a straight 720x480 capture?
