disappearing fonts, help!! at DVinfo.net

hi, would really appreciate advice on this as i have a deadline and am stuck. i was working on an edit today and needed to put in some text...i couldn't get the cursor to appear in the text box. trying to figure out what was wrong, i discovered that if i opened existing text from another part of the timeline in the viewer, i could see it, until i tried to make any changes...then the type vanished. upon exploration, i discovered that the arial font no longer works...i can type if i select another font, but if i select arial, any text vanishes. i have gone into font book and am told that there are duplicates in arial ttf, but clicking resolve duplicates doesn't have any effect on the problem. for the assignment i'm working on, i have to use arial, and of course need to figure out what the heck is going on and how to fix it anyway. has anyone ever experienced this, and what do i do? thanks. working in final cut studio new version on an imac.
