I am guessing you are dealing with multiple factors that are contributing to your problems, and some of the factors are beyond my own personal experience, but here are a few thoughts:
Your processor is probably fine, but for that type of workflow, you could probably benefit from more RAM. (Not sure how much it will help with this specific scenario, though, as I think other factors may be even more important.) I have used NTFS 3G in the past, without any problems at all. But I've only used it in cases of client data storage necessities. I wouldn't even consider it for editing work. It provides a workaround for Mac Based functionality. Consider managing your FCP media data on an external drive formatted to Mac OS Extended (not journaled). That is what FCP and your OS expects to work best with. Not using any RAID? Use RAID, especially with 2k. The primary problem is likely with your external drive, and/or how it is connected to your setup. Can you offer more information about these details? This will help determine how best to respond to your situation - with things like eSATA, Offline editing, Matrox, or using ProRes options. -Jon
