Mount/unmount memory stick reader

I want to connect the Sony (MSAC-US2) memory stick reader that came with my pd150 to my eMac (OS 10.2 & 9.2.2). The operating instructions are not very clear as to how one should mount/unmount the device properly. So my questions are:
-Should the computer be turned off before I connect the memory stick reader?
-How about unmounting the device? Should the computer be turned off first?
-Is there any difference as to how the device should be properly connected/disconnected under OS 10.2 and 9.2.2?

Thank you.

I have the MSAC-US1 and whilr my computer is on i just plug in the USB and it launches Image Capture but will mount the stick as well. I just close out image capture and drag and drop files from the stick. To umount i just eject the stick before disconnecting or removing from the reader. This is in 10.2.
