Color issues in playback

Hey all

Was wondering if anyone has the same problem as me and a possible solution to it. After I have finished a project in FCP I usually export a compressed .H264 version to my computer. The problem I am having is when I play the exported file the color (and contrast) seems to be different from the original sequence when played back in Quicktime and VLC. However, I exported a full resolution ProRez and played it back in quicktime and had the same problem until I went into preferences and check the "Enable Final Cut Studio color compatibility". This made the colors look the same as what I had originally graded in my sequence. This was not the effect that I had with the .H264 file though as the colors change yet again to something different.

I have exported the .H264 video out at 960x540, 4000kb CBR, Keyframed at every 50 frames (this project is at 50P) and tried both .mov and .mp4 extensions to see if there was an issue there.

Has anyone else ever experienced this problem?

Cheers

This issue has been covered a handful of times in various threads.

If you "uncheck" the FCP compatibility box in QT you'll see your video exactly as the rest of the world does in a browser. To get the right final color you have to make a few test outputs to make sure you're getting what you want.

Snow Leopard takes care of this discrepancy in gamma by making 2.2 gamma native rather than the "old" 1.8 standard.

I'll have a search around for those other threads
