FCE full screen display problems

I have just upgraded to a desktop Mac Pro for editing and have transfered my FCE4 license to it. When I was editing on my laptop, I could plug my projector into the external display and select "Video Out - Refresh Display Devices" to have it enable the full screen on the external monitor. With the desktop machine, however, Final Cut never seems to find the additional display -- the only video device listed in "Canvas Playback". The secondary monitor works fine as a OS X display; the problem is only that Final Cut Express's "Digital Cinema Desktop Preview - Full Screen" mode is not available as an option.

The Mac Pro is running Snow Leopard (10.6) and has the default nVidia GT120 graphics card. The primary monitor is on the DVI output and the projector is on the Mini-DisplayPort with a VGA adapter. My working laptop is an older MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz with 10.5.
