The Avid

Can someone explain to me why editors feel the need to say "THE" Avid? All it is is another computer program, just like Final Cut Pro is a computer program. Why must they address it as if it's one entire system in itself, when it's not? WHY?!?

Because once upon a time, it was treated and viewed as a system (with 12 way striped drives, fast computer, outboard audio box, and video I/O box). You had Avid edit suites.

This was before you had off the shelf hardware that was robust enough to really edit.

So, it is no big deal, but it was more than just software back then.

And probably older editors like myself refer to it as the Avid.

And when editing SD video set you back $60 - 100k...

I LEARNED on a Media Composer... I BOUGHT FCP 1.0.2.

Even with FCP and what not Avid is still doing the turnkey system thing and so THE Avid will continue. Same as THE Da Vinci or THE Spirit.

When you build a high end Final Cut room you will start talking in house about THE Final Cut, trust me.

At this point, I just prefer "THE Edit Bay". It's about EVERYTHING in the room (hardware, software, royalty-free, the editor and his/her training and experience...)
