File type questions at DVinfo.net

Hello,

a little help please..

I am preparing some graphics and some video clips for a fellow editor across the country.. I am PC user, and they will be editing on Mac using FCP.. First can I give them a 32 bit TIFF file, and will they be able to just drop on the timeline?? (and Alpha Channel is intact ??) If not then what format ??

Is it best to prepare the video as Quicktime to geve them ?? What other formats ??

Any other gotcha's ??

FCP doesn't handle lots of images very well.

Quicktime should be good. Match their sequence settings- usually 48khz NTSC DV.

If they have QT Pro (which they should), then they should be able to convert whatever you have, unless you are using proprietary DV codecs and not common ones like the microsoft DV codec.

DV tape works well too.

The sure-fire way is to send them a test clip first.

FCP loves .PSD

FCP won't work properly without QT Pro, so that wouldn't be an issue. There are tutorials here on preparing photos, graphics etc. for FCP. I agree with Sharon about FCP liking PSD files. There is a tutorial about preparing Photoshop files at the end of the tutorials in the link.

Our motto over here used to be before FCP 4 and LiveType was "FCP has a great text editor yeah! It’s Photoshop"

FCP now has a robust text editor and it works better with .Psd files better.

Hello,

One more question, people suggested using photoshop files..
(.psd files) if the file has transparency (alpha channel) should it just be a one layer file?? (a transparent backround with the logo dragged right onto that layer)

That's something that is cool about Photoshop try using some layers as to your project as FCP will separate them for you and you can turn them on and off as you wish.

If you don't like that just flatten the project in Photoshop prior to import. However making sure you save a copy of the project with the layers, as it's always good to have that.
