FCP effects
I have someone doing some editing work for me in FCP and then emailing the project file back. She tried to send me some effects that she had created, but when I open them, it starts Quicktime. The effects seem to have a .mov extension. Any clue as to what is going on here? I'm very new to FCP.
Thanks, Chad |

Sounds like there might be a disconnect between what you need, and what your editing partner is sending you. The short answer is:
If you need a project file, it should end in .fcp If you need a video file, it should end in .mov ...but there are probably some additional variables that are not being accounted for here. But this is a start. Hope this helps,

There's two ways the video can be exported from FCP. Export>Quicktime (with self contained checked) Or export>quicktime conversion, I'm pretty sure conversion will always compress it, and that you'd always want to export quicktime (without the "conversion") Just make sure the settings in the timeline are high/Dynamic (found under RT in the top left of the timeline).
You can open that uncompressed FCP file in Quicktime as well as Final Cut. Don't use the "conversion", unless you want to make the file size smaller or something.
