Powermac G5 confirmed?
Apparently Apple goofed yesterday and, briefly, there was a listing of the specs of the new computer on the Apple Store Powermac page. Since I didn't see the original, only the repeated infromation on the rumor sites (some of which Apple has already ordered removed) and on the usenet groups, this could still be one very clever and elaborate hoax. Here they are -
1.6GHz, 1.8GHz, or Dual 2GHz PowerPC G5 processors up to 1GHz processor bus up to 8GB of DDR SDRAM Fast Serial ATA hard drives AGP 8X Pro graphics options from NVIDIA or ATI three PCI or PCI-X expansion slots three USB 2.0 ports one FireWire 800 and two FireWire 400 ports Bluetooth and AirPort Extreme ready optical and analog audio in and out. Several reports have boxes on pallets at Apple stores marked do not open before Monday....remember Steve Jobs gives his keynote speech at WWDC at 10:00 am Pacific Time and it will be broadcast at many Apple stores. Let the drooling begin.

Sounds nice. I like the addition of the A/D audio ins/outs!

But is it the 970s (likely) or the Motorola? Motorola has made a G5, but it's not really for an Apple. So, it's the IBM 970 and I think Motorola is dead for Apple, and thank goodness for that...Motorola G4 chips really sucked.
The G5 name is probably just to carry on the Gx name. heath

I was checking in all afternoon at macminute.com and when Steve said the mistake was true (posting the specs early), I flipped out. It's an ugly machine, but who cares?!

some disturbing news
not trying to start a flame war, but someone has caught apple cheating on the new speed tests comparing the G5 to PIV.
Here is the link http://www.haxial.com/spls-soapbox/apple-powermac-G5/ http://www.slashdot.org has a link to said ariticle, plus discussions, warning, /. is a wild open place. Once again, don't flame me, just the messenger here. |

I've learned, after a great science class at my school Florida Atlantic University, most of what people say/speculate is false. Anyone can prove anything anyway they want. The three "any's." I like Apple because it's stable and fast; I like PCs because the architecture is easy. I like OS X because it's easy and stable. I hate Windows because it's always buggy (NT 4.0 ain't bad, but still buggy and old). I'm trying different flavors of Linux right now, just for fun (I'm new to the computer nerd world), and find Mandrake is actually not as bad as I thought. I can't even load up Red Hat, the alleged BEST Linux... heath

I'm not picking sides. Mandrake is pretty cool, but most business goe with RedHat for the support. SCO is trying to scare everyone and failing miserably.

Everytime I try installing the latest Red Hat on either a new or old PC, using two different monitors (one is new, the other is about two years old), Red Hat says it can't detect the monitor. Then said monitor goes blank. And Red Hat goes in the proverbial garbage for me. heath
