Can a bad dvd cause damage

I recently played a dvd in my Phillips dvd recorder. It kept pausing on it's own and making noises. I did notice the dvd smelled like cigarette smoke. Every since then I have had some problems with my dvd recorder. Is it possible for a bad dvd to cause damage to a dvd player?

Thank you,
Tony
