What bit rate do you use for streaming?

I decided to post my shorts in H.264 at 512Kbps. Do you think this is a reasonable bit rate in this age? I am not worried about the dial-up crowd; they should not expect to be able to watch a film in real-time.

I use 1.24 Mbps for my demo clips. I used H.264 also. They seem to look decent. I'm running the resolution at 240x320. It's a balance between how many lines you want vs. how much compression artifacts you want to see.

I found a formula that worked for me, opinions vary.
