Anyone seen/have the HD-DVDs?

Hey guys,

Has anyone seen the new HD-DVDs that are supposed to be in Best Buy now? I haven't made it out. I read some very mediocre reviews about the look, but reviewers are not so tech savvy sometimes, so I don't know whether to trust them...

Anyone seen one? Anyone bought one?

One review I saw said there wasn't much quality difference compared to broadcast HDTV signals, and that the images didn't look all that great on standard SD TV sets. Well, DUH!!! What, did the reviewer think this was a 4K video format which would magically transform a $99 TV into a movie theater? Sheesh.

Early user reviews seem to be more positive. I think we'll be satisfied when more of us have had a chance to see the new format in action on large HDTV displays.

like all mpeg products, HD-DVD rely on encoding and eventually on quality of player. (and obviously the screen too)
There will be high quality HD-DVD (like there was high quality DVD) and we will see the bad and ugly too...
I am afraid that most of time HD-DVD will be just a copy of HDTV streams (at 8 or 10 mbps), so , well under what we can have with good HDV.

I've seen a few and I'm really not impressed. Definitely an improvement over standard definition DVDs, but still, they have a long way to go.
