Dual Layer burners/media compatability

Are there any compatability issues with burned dual layer DVDs being played on set top dvd players? I'm hesitating to jump into a new burner until I'm sure that the disks will be playable.

Also - any guess when the dual layer media cost will come out of the stratosphere?

lets just say it has not lived up to the hype when combatibility enters the conversation...

I suspected that, like the original DVD+ and DVD-, it would take a while for compatability to occur.
