freeware for erasing a DVD-RW?

I decided to start running a test burn on a DVD-RW each time I do a new disc since I run in to glitches every now and then that ruin a blank DVD-R. However, I didn't realize that Windows doesn't let you erase DVD-RW. I could shell out the money for Nero to do this, but since all I need to be able to do is erase them, I thought maybe someone knew of a freeware utility that will enable me to do this. Anyone?

Thanks in advance,

Stu

So what are you using to record it then in the first place? Any
recording software should allow erasing as well. Most burners
come with software as well.

What OS are you running? Because I think XP with Service Pack 1
does support DVD RW erasing, but I'm not 100% sure on this.

I'm using DVDit to burn the discs, and I can't find anything in that program related to erasing DVD-R/W discs. I'm running XP with updated service packs, but it doesn't support DVD utilities. At least, I can't get it to do so, and the IT guy at my school says it won't. Maybe we're missing something...

So if you insert the disc and you go to my computer and right-click
on the drive it's in, you don't get a format or erase option?

On the web I found this line as well:

" In some cases when you start to record to a DVD-RW the program will ask if you want to erase the RW or insert a new disk. I think DVDit! does it this way "

right on the first question. There is not "erase this disc" option as there is with the CD-R/W drive. In fact, that option comes up when I put a CD-RW in my DVD-RW drive.

I'll try writing to a DVD-RW that already has data on it using DVDit. That may do the trick. Thanks
