giant disk image size from tiny assets?

So I made an authored DVD in DVD STudio pro. It has one clip in it, about five minutes, made up a 272 MB m2v video clip, and a 39 MB QT audio clip (I let DVD Studio encode that). I generally create a disk image instead of burning from the program, 'cause that way I can control the burn speed by burning from the finder. So, this disk image is about 2.5 GB large. How is that possible? The assets' total size is only around 300 MB. Where did this inflation come from?
