Scorpion Light from Blind Spot Gear

Billy Campbell of Blind Spot Gear goes over the Scorpion Light which was shown at NAB 2014. Basically you'd be able to clamp the lights on different things. Seams like a good concept.

Yes, I see how I didn't describe the lights in the best way. Still seams like a neat product.

I was just kiddin' around -- I wouldn't mind a few of those lights.

Re: Scorpion Light from Blind Spot Gear

Have definitely hacked a few ikea shelf lights and barbecue lights to do similar things in my time. It would be nice to have some tough ones that are full featured though.
I wonder what they'll go for?

Re: Scorpion Light from Blind Spot Gear

So it's:
1) a super clamp
2) a flex arm
3) an LED light that runs NP batteries.
Total cost: $130
Time to assemble: 39 seconds (I timed myself building one).

And he's selling them for... I don't know what the exchange rate is, like $300 each?
Call me Scottish (I am) but am I missing some hidden value here?

Okay, and don't call me Swedish (I'm Norwegian), but why not go for this $29 IKEA light:

TIVED LED wall/clamp spotlight - IKEA

Re: Scorpion Light from Blind Spot Gear

It's corded for one thing. They're often not very strong. They don't necessarily produce very much light and/or can't take a brighter globe easily because of size and heat problems in long term use. Attaching stuff to them can also be tricky making them difficult to flag, gel, scrim, gobo, snoot etc. (see also strength should you succeed in attaching things)

I'm not justifying the price exactly, but they are things you'd want a professional model to address so presumably this would.
Hacking is perfectly acceptable and fun of course, but who involved in cameras et al hasn't paid through the nose for some specialty bespoke doohickey just because they got tired of taping things to each other? These aren't wildly off base for the usual retail for pro on-camera lights and the like so *shrug* I guess we'll see how they do.
