Atomos Announces "Shogun" 4k recorder

Right on time Atomos!

Announcing Atomos Shogun – first 4K HDMI recorder compatible with Sony A7S | EOSHD.com

Looks like the GH4 and A7s have a new recorder. I'm surprised that the A7r has no onboard 4K codec enabled.

Better for Atomos!

Re: Atomos Announces "Shogun" 4k recorder

But the big difference is that the A7s must have the external recorder to record 4K and the GH4 doesn't.

So you're looking at a price of around $4,000 before lenses for the Sony vs $1,699 for the GH4. That's pretty significant.

Or you can have an AX100 for $2,000 complete and be done. That's looking better and better. Of course we know each system has its virtues and drawbacks. :)

Re: Atomos Announces "Shogun" 4k recorder

I have some "pre-NAB" anxiety for the last two weeks since I have purchased my AX100.

I kept second guessing my decision. After the Sony press conference, I breathed a HUGE sigh of relief.

I'm now at peace with my AX100. I'm really happy I got it and I'm done spending on cameras for the year. In 2015 I'll budget myself about $6,000 for a more serious 4K camera. But for now?...I'm taking the AX100 and shooting the Vegas strip on Monday and Tuesday night. (my first "serious" 4k demo...maybe super 35mm FS 200?)

I'll bet this A7s and the "Shogun" will be a great combo!

Re: Atomos Announces "Shogun" 4k recorder

I love my Ninja 2, don't get me wrong but I despise having to use a tascam to channel external audio (2 lav mics) into the Ninja for my one man band efforts. It's so ridiculously bulky and you have to initiate a cumbersome launch sequence rather than push one nice easy record button. Any idea whether the Shogun will remedy this?

"4K ProRes onto single SSDs"... (8-bit from the Sony)

"On the GH4 this will be a 10bit output to a 10bit ProRes file."

...just another reason to use a Mac workflow

Hi

Do we know if this supports HDMI 2.0 so future proofed, i.e. can record 50/60fps?

Regards

Phil

Windows based machines have no problem reading ProRes.

sounds like ProRes envy to me... no one is forcing you to use Final Cut Pro, but I thought it was obvious that a ProRes workflow means working on Mac. By the way, my Mac runs Windows.

Re: Atomos Announces "Shogun" 4k recorder

This looks really great…

But as I've stated elsewhere I just want Atomos to fix the issues with the current crop of recorders (especially the Ninja Blade, which I own, and the older Ninja Samurai) regarding the 2 pixel black line on the r/h side with pull down. The firmware update we were promise last week is still vapour ware…Sure, it's a simple work around for now in CS6 (using 50i recorded on the NB and then converting to 25p in NLE)…but I still want it fixed. Please!

I'm afraid your assertion is out of date. You can edit ProRes natively on Windows - have been able to for several years, and now you can output it with the Miraizon DNxHD and ProRes Codec Components for $50.

Thanks for posting that link Mark! I'll have to buy the codec set before I start my next project.

Better not go there as it does not add anything constructive to this thread.

Re: Atomos Announces "Shogun" 4k recorder

I hope Atomos will be allowed by Sony to record 4K from the FS700. Would be a great option to the Odessey 7Q to be able to record 4K ProRes to Atomos' $99 2TB raided drives. Would be much more cost effective than the 7Q...

Re: Atomos Announces "Shogun" 4k recorder

Does not mention if it can record 4K 50/60P HDMI 2.0 spec. That would be great.

Ron Evans

EDIT: Just checked and it will only do 24,25,30P for 3840x2160. Hope in the future it will do the full range.
