Rakuten?

Has anyone ordered a product from Rakuten.com?

They seem to be the Japanese version of Amazon.

I was looking at a video camera, and it appears it actually gets ordered from Adorama through Rakuten...but even cheaper.

Re: Rakuten?

I thought Rakuten was operating the old buy.com business?

I notice they're involved with the Play.com on line DVD & CD, plus a now an increasing range of other products, store. It recently changed the name to Rakuten's Play.com on the endless e-mails.

Re: Rakuten?

It is correct that buy.com turned into Rakuten. I have mostly ordered from them when they were buy.com but probably have place one or two orders since the name change.

They have always been a reputable company with my orders and I think if you do research you will find the same. They are not one of these ripoff online stores.

A bit of trivia - years ago before Amazon was king I used to buy quite a few things from buy.com and entered a weekly contest they had for various items. I was deleting junk mail one day and almost deleted an email with the subject line "congratulations" until I saw it was from buy.com who I knew was legit. This was around 2002 and I had won their weekly contest which was for one of the first 5 megapixel cameras (Nikon) and a lot of accessories. I contacted the person in the email and sure enough I was that weeks winner and in a few days got a package with the camera, etc. I checked and at the time it was all worth about $500 in 2002 dollars.

Re: Rakuten?

Used to order from Buy.com on a regular basis. Ever since the Rakuten purchase, the service quality has gone *way* down. I've had numerous orders go unfilled and other problems. A good portion is because it has mostly turned into a marketplace vendor with other companies fulfilling orders. And they have virtually *no* control over those vendors. Shipping, stock, etc... are all different prices to the point where you might as well order on eBay.

No thanks, not going back there anytime soon. It's a shame because I used to like them, but not anymore.
