Has anyone read the book "Contact" by Carl Sagan?

There is this mini-sub plot in the film of S.R. Hadden makes a lot of money by inventing a device (Adnix) that blocks TV commercials. How does the device know when a TV commercial comes on? It senses the increased volume.

When I was reading the book a couple years ago this part made me literally laugh out loud. The book was released in 1985... what can I say.
