ATSC Adopts Standard for Advanced Video Coding

ATSC is the new multi-national committee on television standards so pay attention. Sent to me in an email but here's the direct link.

Essentially, they recognize that MPEG-2 is being supplanted by newer encoding/decoding methods and are adding it to their standards.
