AE doesn't have native 3D text.
You can either buy a plug-in that will do it inside AE or buy a program that will create text that you can import. Go to the Adobe Web Site and look at their links to plug-in suppliers.

Zaxwerks 3D invigorator is one plugin
I always make my text in fireworks, it has several nice bevel/emboss effects to make your text appear to stand out of the screen.

If you are using 6.0 (not sure about other versions), you can create text as usual, and then flip on the 3D switch. This then allows you to warp text on the XY and Z axis. I have used this for a cheap 3d text effect and it has been satifactory.
