Workflow nanoflash - avid media composer 5.5 (soon 6)/mac

Should I choose .mov or .mxf for 1080p25, 50 Mbit Long GOP when I want to import the footage to avid media composer 5.5 (soon 6)/mac? Do I need to transcode when importing? How long does it take?

Dear Thomas,

I started to answer you question late last night.

For the latest versions of Avid, I would typically recommend shooting ".MXF".

But, I understand that ".MOV" also works well.

I hope others with more specific knowledge will post their thoughts and suggestions.

Please note that you will probably want to run AMA, and this requires you to install an AVA AMA Plug-In.

Please run a test to determine which is best for you.

Re: Workflow nanoflash - avid media composer 5.5 (soon 6)/mac

I have done some research - and found out that the nanoflash mxf-filestructure is different from the Avid mxf - and that causes all kinds of problems:
Browse Site by Tags - Avid Community
I wonder if there is anybody who has found a way to work with nanoflash-files with the mc?
does anybody know if it will be less troublesome with the mc6?
Btw: the camera is an af101.

@ Dan: Thanks for your quick reply! - I have just switched from FCP to MC - as many others will do/have done .According to the threads I have found, MC and nanoflash files are of different flavour - and it is not reliable to use MC with nanoflash. PLEASE change this! Maybe you can offer DNxHD as an option (as pix and ki pro mini)? - I would pay for it! And many others as well. There will be a lot of switchers who will be dissappointed if nanoflash files do not work together well with avid mc.
Recording in .mov is not an option. Transcoding takes MUCH too long.

Dear Thomas,

The latest versions of Avid work fine with our files.

I tried Avid 6 briefly, using AMA and it seemed to work also.
