Dear Robin,
Your camera just needs to send an HD-SDI or SD-SDI signal in order to use the Crank feature on the nanoFlash. Your camera can be recording normally, or not. Also, if your camera has a Crank or Slow & Quick feature, then it can be active while the nanoFlash Crank feature is active also, at the same or a different Crank rate. However, if you are triggering on Incrementing Timecode, the nanoFlash will not start recording if your camera's timecode is not rolling. Thus, it is usually appropriate, if you camera is not rolling, to use a different System|Trigger option.
