Cineform
Since you guys are so responsive, can I also add my name to the list of those wishing to see some kind of native Cineform codec recording functionality? It seems more and more likely that I will be navigating in the Cineform direction due to our emerging workflows and the XDR has become an integral part of our process.
Thanks! |

Dear Justin,
As much as we would like to offer Cineform, at this time it is not part of the current Flash XDR or nanoFlash design. Our internal circuits, at this time, do not have Cineform functionaliity. One of the main issues is power. We wanted to keep our power consumption to a minimum, as this minimizes weight and heat. Without designing a custom Cineform chip, a software approach to create Cineform files takes a lot of processing, and thus a lot of power. Our nanoFlash draws less than 6 watts. A modern, multi-gigahertz computer takes far more than that, just for the CPU.

Fair enough.
OK then. Will find a solution in the absence of that.

I understand that the Wafian recorder systems record natively to cineform. They may also be an expensive proposition compared to the offering here. Rather a pity all of this but there it is.

Dear Justin and Bob,
One can always take our files and transcode them to Cineform if desired. We realize that you would like for our recorder to save you this step, it is just not possible, as far as I know, in a small, 5.6 watt device such as ours. It may be possible in the future, if someone builds a custom integrated circuit to perform the Cineform encoding.
