do we still need RAID for Aspect?
what with SATA 3.0 Gb/s drives, do we still need RAID for editing with Aspect? Can I get away with one drive. Or one for video and one for project files?

The theoretical speed and sustained speed of a drive are two different things. No drive does 3.0Gb/s = 375MBytes/s, but modern drive can do 50MB/s, making a RAID less import for standard dual stream playback.

In practical terms, I find that RAID 10 is the best.
(It combines speed of RAID 0 with redundancy of RAID 1, in one system.) If you only use RAID 0, prepare to periodically lose all your data as one of the drives falls out of the array (hangs, fails, whatever.) So RAID 10 is the answer (at the $$$ cost, of course; but the current HDD prices are really low; not too much to complain about here.) |
