I'm getting a "view on external monitor" and (frame recompressed) note in my preview box...I cannot watch the clip. What am I doing wrong??

Make sure your video device patch through is turned on and make sure you have your monitor settings correct in Vegas. Cycle your camera once and/or close and reopen Vegas. Also, check to see if the little monitor icon in your preview screen is activated. That is what comes to mind to me now. I am sorry I cannot give more details as I have not used Vegas for about a year.

From your post, it seems that you are using Vegas.
Also, from the symptoms, it appears that you have a camera, connected via Firewire to your computer, and it is on. Solution: Turn off your camera, or unplug the firewire cable. This happens frequently when you capture footage, then leave the camera on, while you are attempting to edit. The "Preview on External Monitor" indicates that you should look to the external device for your footage preview. In your case, the footage was being sent to your camera and you should have been able to see your footage on your viewfinder.
