Yes, you're screwed.

I'm kidding. Are you watching the tape using the XL-1 as your VCR? Have you tried transfering your footage to VHS and seeing if the timecode is still there? The timecode should only show up when you're playing that tape in the XL-1.

Only if you do not have an XL1 compatible remote control.

Time code showing in analog output? Use the "On screen" button on the remote to toggle it on/off.

The XL1 default is "ON" when in camera/camcorder mode and "OFF" when in VCR mode.

When playing on a DV VCR, there should de a display setting capability, typically a button marekd display on Sonys. The timecode is in the DV signal, but not burned into in the image. That is accomplished by the playback systgem.

Try burning it to DVD or dubbing it to regular VHS. I guarentee, as soon as you are not looking at the original DV signal, you won't see it anymore.

Did you try this...

You may have the data screen on. try turning of the display using the remote control.

I did not think Canon XL1's can burn a time code on the tape that is visible, and not removable.

If this does not work, your S.O.L.

The XL1S has this burn-in feature as a menu choice. The XL1 does not.

I think Don is right. The "burn in" is only on output , the DV tape doesn't actaually have it " burnt in". Try following Don's description to turn it off.
