last request for advice

Hi Gang!

Ok this is the last time I am going to bug you people about buying an XL1 and whatnot, but I was hoping to get your opinions one one last issue. I bought a used XL1 from B&H today...

1) Good idea? Bad idea? paid about $2495 for it seems to be in great condition. I can trust these guys when they say they have checked it out and say it's in good condition, right?

2) They are offering me a 2-yr. extended warranty covering parts and labor for $85. Should I go for this?

Thanks again to you all so much for your help. You have this buying experience alot more painful and probably saved me from getting screwed!

Thanks!
-SL

No, you could not have bought a new XL1S for that price. Our sponsors carry it for about $3500. I don't want to hear about any low-ball $2500 pricing; there's something wrong in there somewhere. What matters is the realistic prices that good, honest dealers such as our site sponsors advertise, and that's around $3500 for an XL1S. Actual dealer cost isn't very much lower than that. I won't allow any discussions about low-ball dealers as it does a dis-service to our community at large, not to mention the dealers that support what we're doing here.

You can't go wrong with used gear from B&H. The price is about right. Go ahead and buy their 2-year warranty. It would be a good idea to determine whether or not the camera has been to Canon service recently; if not then by all means send it in. You've done well, with an honest dealer (the biggest in the business) and a reasonable used price. Hope this helps,

Bruce-
I tried to find a new XL1 but there does not seem to be one in existance in the entire country! I would love to know where one is if you know?

Chris-
Thanks so much for your advice, but how do you suggest I go about finding out if it has recently been in to Canon? The guys at B&H said it was inspected by their, in house, Canon certified tech. Do you still think I need to send it to Canon?

Thank you so much you guys came through again!

Sorry about that; reference was to a reply that I pulled later which misinformed the original poster about buying "a new XL1S" at that price.

In my opinion he's getting a good deal for an XL1.

Sammy

It is always a good idea to go ahead and send it in to Canon. Go to the XL1 Watchdog at www.dvinfo.net/xl1.htm and read the page called "The XL1 Skinny." It explains everything about sending a camera to a Canon service center. Hope this helps,

Sammy,
If you call Canon's New Jersey repair facility and give them the serial number of the unit, they should be able to give you a service history.
