video camera reports
Greetings everyone,
Just received my brand new XL 1s yesterday and will be shooting a lot of test tapes over the next few weeks. I got to wondering if there is such a thing as a camera report specifically for these video cameras. I've used the typical reports for film cameras and have also devised my own script supervisor reports emphasizing camera info. I think I am in a whole new ball game here if I'm to keep detailed information. Any help is appreciated. Christine |

Christine, I'm probably showing my ignorance here but I'm not sure that I know what you mean by a camera report. The kind I'm used to are the ones on my website, the XL1 Watchdog at www.dvinfo.net/xl1.htm under User Reports. Can you explain for my own benefit exactly what you expect a camera report to entail? Thanks,

Hi Chris,
I'm coming from a film background here, sorry. I'm looking for a form on which to record information such as filters, cameras settings, etc. for each particular setup (one that is specific to video.) This is going to help me remember what I like and dislike about the test tapes I am about to do, but I guess after so many years of keeping detailed notes about lenses, filters, distance to subject (I think I'll be forgoing that from now on), etc., it's pretty hard for me to shoot without it now. It sure comes in handy if you ever need to reshoot. By the way, I've been wondering if you've ever done a survey about the makeup of the XL 1/s owners - age, gender, etc. I have any ulterior motive in asking - I'd like to know how many more women are out there. There seem to be some gender (or at least size ) specific issues - shoulder mount comfort for smaller frames being one. Thanks for any help on the forms. Christine |

Christine,
Like you, I came into this from film, too. Basically, I've been using the standard camera report. I laid one out in Word substituting the word "Roll" with "Tape." Since there is no "Film Type" or "Magazine," those references were exorcised. The space for "Footage" was enlarged to accomodate the larger numbers for "time code." Hope this helps. |

By the way, anyone who would like a copy of the camera report for their own use, I will be happy to e-mail you a PDF copy. Because I hated writing on those narrow pages, this one is laid out on a full-sized 8 1/2 X 11 page.
If you'd rather have the Word.doc file, that's available, too. |

Hi Jay in Miami,
Thanks so much for the camera report (I got it off Jeff's homepage.) I was beginning to think I was a little weird for wanting to use camera reports since no one replied to my query for a few days. I will probably alter this a little bit to fit my own needs. I worked out of Miami for more than ten years, I'm surprised I don't recognize your name - thought I knew most of the film people down there. Thanks again. Hey Jeff, Great idea to put it on your homepage so everyone can access it. Steve, Thanks for the piece on filters - wish I'd had this one week ago before I ordered my whole XL1s package! Just wondering if you have any experience with any of the filters mentioned. Thanks one and all, Christine |

How about if we make this available directly from dvinfo.net -- would that be okay? In the meantime, could one of y'all please send me a copy by e-mail to chris@dvinfo.net -- thanks,
