There is no problem. The XL1 does not need any drivers to
operate. It only needs an NLE which does firewire (I think every NLE that is currently out there on the PC market does) and a DV codec which XP has installed by default. So, you are set to go!

I plugged an XL-1 into an XP machine and it simply asked me if I wanted to capture some video and offered to start the program installed with XP. (I politely declined and loaded a decent NLE for that purpose).

I have tried different cameras with xp but only when i put in my xl1 it says it found some new hardware and no driver. My xl1 is one of the first that came out so maybe i need to send it to canon for an firmwareupgrade?

Just ignore the thing that XP tells you. It will not bother you
anymore about this. The question is, does your camera work with your NLE? It is totally irrelevant what XP thinks about it. Check with your NLE, if it works nothing is wrong. If it doesn't, you can start to look at what is wrong. I highly doubt it is something with your XL1 or its firmware.

I still do not know what the problem is. You are only saying that
XP pops up a message that it has found new hardware. That would be okay with me. Does it also not work? What is the real problem? I would not easily go back to an older OS just for such a reason, but that might be me.
