Recording Time and Date ONLY

Hello,

I am new to this forum but have been invloved in different areas of video production for some time.
I am going to be doing some legal depositions (I am a Certified Legal Video Specialist - which doesn't mean much, really) with my XL1s and I was wondering if there was a way to record Time and Date only using the 'record what's on the viewfinder' feature. This is a very novice question, I am sure, but I am VERY new to this camera and don't have a lot of time to play around with it. The manual hints at the fact that you can do this but when I tried it briefly, I was recording all the junk on the screen as well (how wide or tight the zoom was, etc.).
I just need to know whether I need to acquire a date and time generator (which seems silly) because this is a requirement for doing LEGAL legal depositions.

Thanks in advance,

Steve,
If you have a question and need a quick answer call the Canon customer service(1-800-828-4040). If you've joined the XL-1 Club, call 1-800-652-2666. I think I can do it on my XL-1 but the "s" is another whole story.

Would you please e-mail me and fill me in on a few things?

AZ, here doesn't allow you to use DV because you'd have to transfer it to VHS. This could be considered altering it or at least the possibility exists. How does Ohio handle it and was this ever an issue.

Thanks,
Bruce

Bruce, Could you take a VHS recorder with the xl1 and record the composite out?

I believe you can, but you would have to record a mini-dv tape at the same time, otherwise the no tape signal would show. Now you really have me thinking, I'll have to try both ways. I will get back to you later.

Can you even get a VHS camcorder anymore? I have one in the attic that broke down years ago. I guess the thing to do would be to call a lawyer and ask what the state law is,,,There must be some loop hole around a "VHS only rule"

Fellows, maybe I'm not clear on the concept here, but I thought that this was all explained on pages 79-80 in your XL1S manual. You can select it to display data, time and date, or time and date only. Chart on page 80.
